Guangzhou Displays its CUV Electrified Wares at 2013 Detroit Show

Guangzhou Displays its CUV, Electrified Wares at 2013 Detroit Show For the last several years at least one Chinese automaker has dared to show off its wares at the NAIAS, inevitably drawing, er, “constructive criticism” from the charitable among the journalist corps; jeers and cheap shots from the rest of us. Changfeng Motor was first in 2007, and since then BYD, Chamco, Geely, and Brilliance have all braved Detroit in January. This year it’s Guangzhou’s turn. GAC has had joint ventures with Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, and Fiat. Its Trumpchi sedan is based on Alfa Romeo 166 sedan underpinnings, as is its GS5 crossover. The China-market savvy among you may recognize it as the production version of the 2009 concept X-power (is anyone that China savvy?). The GS5 launched in March 2012 and was heralded by the local press as one of the best-looking crossovers currently made in China. Hmmm. Powered by a choice of naturally aspirated or turbocharged 2.0-liter engines in China, the price ranges from $20,000-37,000 in its home market.

From the show floor: The gathered press was informed that the GAC Group’s presence in Detroit “signals the company’s transition to a global company,” but no specific expansion plans were divulged. California’s AC Propulsion Inc. helped develop some of the electric motors in the Trumchi 4WD Hybrid and and GS5 BEV, both of which are homologated for pending sale in China.

We all know that China has lots of lithium and rare-earth metals – materials necessary to make batteries and electric motors – so here in Detroit, Guangzhou’s cars are all electrified. First up is an all-wheel-drive hybrid version of the Trumpchi sedan, which sandwiches a 20-hp/34-lb-ft starter/generator motor between the 1.8-liter (142-hp/123-lb-ft) four-cylinder engine and transmission up front. At the rear, there’s a second 34-hp/123-lb-ft permanent magnet motor on the rear axle. The transmission is a single-clutch automated-manual transmission that relies upon thrust from the rear motor to fill in the usual torque-sag that occurs when such transmission opens the clutch to change gears for twin-clutch levels of smoothness. Fuel economy from the heavier all-wheel-drive hybrid is said to improve by 30 percent, while acceleration to 62 mph is trimmed by 2 seconds to 10.9 seconds. A 1.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack handles the catch-and-release duties for regenerated and acceleration-boosting energy.
The GS5 on display features a full battery-electric drivetrain energized by a 35-kWh lithium-ion battery pack driving an induction motor with peak output ratings of 201 hp and 162 lb-ft (continuous ratings are 67 and 55). 0-62-mph acceleration takes just 8.5 seconds, it can climb a 30-percent grade, top speed is 104 mph, and the range is quoted as 100 miles at a constant 62 mph (figure way less on the EPA cycle).
The E-Jet concept arrives wearing vaguely Infiniti-inspired styling that may rank as the least peculiar of any Chinese concept or production car yet to grace the NAIAS. Based on Guangzhou’s new compact architecture, it promises to be China’s Volt, providing extended-range electric propulsion. A 13-kWh lithium-ion battery feeds a 127-hp/168-lb-ft (peak) electric motor that can hustle the E-Jet to 30 mph in 4.5 seconds, en route to a 100-mph top speed. Pure EV range is quoted at a (hard-to-imagine) 60 miles. When the battery is depleted, a 1.0-liter 60-hp/60-lb-ft I-4 engine drives a 40-hp generator that keeps the electrons flowing.
Guangzhou’s NAIAS display in the concourse area outside the main show floor may have been marred by an amateurish looping video, but its three reasonable vehicles have set a high bar for whatever Chinese brand follows in 2014.

New Car 2013

New Car 2013

The year will see competition hot up in the economy and hatchback segment cars. In this segment, the old champs Maruti, Hyundai and Tata will fight to maintain their market shares as GM, Honda, Toyota, Renault, Skoda, Volkwagen, Nissan, Ford, and Mahindra also enter this segment with new offerings.

In the sedan segment, Honda which performed very badly in 2012 will look to salvage its lost pride and is planning to launch a slew of diesel models aimed for Indian market. Here it will compete with GM, Skoda, Volkswagon, Toyota, and Renault. Among upcoming cars in India, the SUV space will see the much awaited Ford EcoSport that will challenge Duster

The luxury segment which is dominated by few car makers will see many upcoming cares in India in 2013. The big three - BMW, Audi and Mercedes, will jostle for space with new arrivals like Porsche, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, and Aston Martin. BMW is planning to launch its X1 model in India. This model will be the entry level model in Indian market and will bring many more young aspirants to buy luxury car. Similar strategy is being adopted by Audi and Mercedes also and they all are bringing in entry level models with price tags of approx. Rs. 25 lacs

Within the luxury car segment, separate niches will get carved out in the form of super luxury sport sedans, convertible sport coupes, SUVs, and MPV, etc. The price range of these cars will start from Rs. 50 lakh onwards.

Maruti Suzuki, the largest car maker in India lost significant market share in 2012, on account of strikes and lockouts in its Manesar plant and also due to aggressive marketing by other competitors. Marutis market share is already on decline and it will have to strike back in 2013 if it has to maintain its dominance on the Indian roads.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Concept 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Hyundai tuner ARK performance will bring a modified Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec to the 2012 SEMA show this fall. Like other Hyundais tuned for the aftermarket show, ARK Performance will upgrade the Genesis Coupes performance and aesthetics.   While Hyundai already improved the Genesis Coupes 3.8-liter V-6 for 2013 by adding direct-injection, the SEMA show car gets bumped another 47 hp and 45 lb-ft of torque (now at 395 hp and 340 lb-ft) with a Brian Crower 4.2-liter stroker kit enhanced by an intake, oil cooler, lightweight pullies, and ceramic-coated headers from ARK performance. To handle the addition power, the drivetrain has been upgraded with an ARK carbon plate clutch kit with a limited-slip differential from Cusco. Nitto NT05 tires wrapped around Yokohama ADVAN RS2 alloy wheels put the power to the ground. A six-piston Big Brake kit front and rear brings the customized Genesis Coupe R-Spec to a stop. No SEMA show car would be complete without wild interior and exterior modifications.

Outside, the Genesis Coupe now sports a carbon fiber hood with heat extractor vents and a carbon wing out back. An aggressive front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear overfenders create a widebody effect. A custom interior from JPM Coachworks features a Sparco steering wheel and racing seats finished in red, while Cusco supplies the eight-point roll cage.
No estimated performance figures were provided for the modified Genesis Coupe, but during our 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track First Test, we were able to reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, run the standing quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 102.2 mph while the stock brakes brought the coupe to a stop in 112 feet. The 2013 Genesis Coupe also pulled 0.91 g around the skidpad.
The ARK performance modified Hyundai Genesis Coupe is just the latest show car from the Hyundai-tuner: last year, ARK Performance brought to the SEMA show a modified Hyundai Veloster with custom turbocharger and wild exterior modifications.

Cosworth-Tuned 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
A Cosworth-tuned Hyundai Genesis Coupe will join the Genesis Coupe R-Spec modified by ARK Performance at the 2012 SEMA Show. Known as the Cosworth Genesis Racing Series (CGRS), the modified coupe will feature the prerequisite performance and appearance upgrades expected at the show. Cosworth boosted the Genesis Coupe 3.8-liters power output to 389 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque - up 41 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque - thanks to better heat, air, and engine controls management. The suspension and braking systems have also been updated. Outside, special blue paint sets off the body kit with integrated lip and trunk lid spoilers, and a rear valance. Of course, the interior has also received show car trim updates with specially-finished two-tone sports seats. 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Cosworth Genesis Racing Series CGRS 2012 SEMA show car right rear image 11 300x187 imageHeres the full list of CGRS Genesis Coupe modifications straight from Hyundai:

Dodge Dart 2013

Dodge Dart 2013

Dodge Dart 2013

Almost two and a half years have passed since an ailing Chrysler Group came under the stewardship of Fiat SpA. Since then, the automaker has reinvigorated its product portfolio with overhauled models, drastically improved interiors, and new powertrains. While I generally stay away from low-hanging automotive cliche fruit, Dodge made this one too easy to pass up. Since it named its car after a fold sewn into a piece of clothing to make it fit better, it just cant be ignored (OK, so maybe thats not the One small detail in our 2013 Dodge Dart SXT Rallye that I really like is this And although the notchs location (right up against the Darts passenger-seat seat-back bolster) is a little inconvenient, it effectively prevents the cord from being smashed Naming the new compact Dodge the Dart was brilliant. Many potential customers young and old know the ultra-reliable, cheap and cheerful mid-60s slant-six models and the late 60s GT with the V-8 better than the overstyled early 60s full-size cars or the So, Chrysler and Fiat walked into a bar together and, surprisingly, it didn’t end with a punch line. The Dodge Dart is the first jointly-developed product of the recently-wed automakers, and it’s not funny at all. Based on a snazzy Alfa The All-New 2013 Dodge Dart boasts a performance-inspired exterior design that leverages the world-class architecture of Alfa Romeo and infuses it with Dodge passion and design. Clean lines from nose to tail form its curvaceous silhouette. The unmistakable .

The single most important thing about the 2013 Dodge Dart is that it proves Chrysler is still in the game. The new Dart compact sedan may not leapfrog every other compact on the market to set lofty new heights of excellence. But its stylish, fun to drive At last, a racier-looking, higher-horsepower version of the 2013 Dodge Dart is here, and slated to be shown for the first time, beginning next week, at the Detroit Auto Show. While its not yet the high-performance R/T, in the meantime we have the Dart GT. Youll Like This Car If Bold looks, impressive features, outstanding interior space, Euro-flavored driving dynamics and fuel-efficient powertrain choices – eventually including a mileage-maxing aero package – coupled with value pricing make the new "You dont need to put on your sunglasses and hide because youre embarrassed about your ride," the Chrysler flack was saying as we sat in a dim chamber at the W Hotel in Austin, a velvet-tinged barroom which, eight hours earlier, had played host to .
