Partnership between the Alliance of Civilizations and the BMW GROUP

In an unprecedented partnership with the private sector, the Alliance of Civilizations (AOC), an initiative of the UN Secretary-General, is joining hands with the BMW Group to launch an award for intercultural innovation. The name of the award is “BMW Group Award for Intercultural Innovation in support of the Alliance of Civilizations, under the auspices of the United Nations”.



The annual award will identify highly innovative initiatives that are advancing cross-cultural understanding between different communities and cultures. For future recipients of the award, alongside a monetary prize, winning will mean receiving support from the AOC and the BMW Group and its influential network of civil society, corporate, government, media and foundation partners. The specific assistance provided will depend on the individual needs of each project.





By providing support to emerging intercultural initiatives, the AOC and the BMW Group aim to encourage innovation in the field while helping winners expand their projects, make them more impactful, and replicate them in other settings where they might be useful.



Both BMW Group and the AOC come with a track-record of having supported intercultural projects around the world for many years. The new award builds on such previous efforts.



The ten most innovative initiatives in the area of intercultural understanding will be distinguished for the first time at an award ceremony that will take place during the Fourth Annual UNAOC Forum in Doha, Qatar in December 2011. Intercultural understanding has a long tradition in the BMW Group

As an international company with a multinational workforce, the BMW Group has recognized the importance of mutual cooperation between different cultural groups for decades. Through the BMW Group Award for Intercultural Learning/Commitment the company has recognized innovative projects and personalities around the world for 14 years, for their support to sustainable and open relationships between international communities. Hundreds of projects and documents have been received in which people express their ideas for intercultural cooperation either within their own neighbourhoods or at trans-regional level. Over the long history of this award, more than 40 projects and academic papers have been awarded. Current awardees are supported for a whole year by employees of the company.



The Alliance of Civilizations (AOC) is an initiative of the UN Secretary-General which aims to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions. It also helps to counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. The AOC was established in 2005, at the initiative of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations and under the leadership of Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, as High Representative for the AOC.

Something to Focus On

If youre anything like me, you know that its easy to run out of ideas for taking a perfect photo. Thats why i picked up The Unforgettable Photograph by George Lange and Scott Mowbray. Its full of unique ideas for taking an amazing photo. 

Recently, Ive been focusing on the idea of depth of field.  This is where you focus your shot on the closest subject, and in result the things farther back in the shot are blurred.  Because of this, depth of field shots are only good for certain things since theyre meant to capture a specific object in time and not an entire picture of detail. Lange realized this through his work too, "i dont want pictures to be so blatantly about technique. There are times when it works, though"(168). You achieve a Depth of field shot by "first, selecting the widest possible aperture in the AV mode and, second, zooming in" (168). 

When i tried this idea I found that it works best with objects rather than people. When taking pictures of people you want to capture the moment as it is rather than try to pose it (26). This technique gives each photo a sense of professionalism which isnt always needed when taking shots of people. Which in contrast, always works out when taking a picture of any object, even a tree branch or a flower! Have you tried a depth of field shot? Can you prove me wrong? Does Depth of Field work well on people too?

Ive never been nominated for this award before, though I have been for another award called Sunshine Award granted by Carina from Windswept Wishes! My Facts:
1. I am a newlywed, and very proud of it! We had the civil marriage on the 7th December 2013, as a Saint Nicholas present to eachother and we shall have the Church Ceremony + Party on the 9th August 2014.
2. I am a proud expat that loves to travel as much as possible. I believe that the best things in life that one can store are memories and experiences.
3. I love my family and the worst thing about being an expat is not being able to be close to the ones you love, to be close to your family - I really miss my sister, mum and my awesome Granny :) 
4. I am happy to say that I do have a soulmate, my dear pea in the pod, but I am so sad she is so far away that I get to see her only once or twice in a year :( Love you Dana!
5. I am proud of my orientation in space sense and the fact that if you take me one time to a place I would know how to get there again with my eyes closed. Actually that is one of the things my lovely other half is jealous about. I get to have the saying where and what road we should take :)
6. I was supposed to stay in Poland, in Krakow, just for a few months - to build some more work experience - but the term ended up to be longer as I met the man of my life here.
7. To my shame, before coming to Poland I did not know a lot about it - except Sobieski, World War II histories, Auschwitz & Birkenau, Schindlers List & The Pianist. I know, I am mortified! but today, mainly due to my husband, I know more and more about this lovely country.
8. I am a very good Krakow guide - certified by all my friends and people I helped around. I lived for around 6 months in the city center and I would never go straight home. I would always have walks and discover new things. That is how I learned the streets and the little dark and twisted and magical corners of this lovely town I call home now. My husband says that he can trust 2 people to be his GPS while lost in Krakow - me and one dear friend that knows Nowa Huta well... 
9. Nowa Huta is the only region / area / district in Krakow where I could get lost. For me all the houses and blocks of flats look the same and this is very confusing - same height, same color... 
10. I love fruits :) I love fruits more than I love candies and chocolate. That is precisely why when I look at the movie Amelie I can feel a connection with her... I used to put berries on my fingertips as well... and also cherries around my ears. Hey! Whom am I trying to fool here? I still do that :) 
11. I believe that we never grow old at heart. Growing old is a choice that everyone makes and I surely hope that both me and my lovely half will manage to keep our hearts young :)

The Questions:

1. If you could escape to any fantasy world (book/TV/movie) which one would you choose?

I would choose The Lord of The Rings/Silmarillion without any shred of doubt! I would be confused over the fact that I would like to be both human and elf so that will be a struggle to choose... but that is the place where I would like to escape for sure. 

2. The song/soundtrack of your year so far? 

I would say Let It Go - from the Frozen soundtrack. Now that is a song that just got sticked to my brain and wont let it go, my friends! Now Ive heart Idina Menzel before and I admire his voice/vocal talents. The first movie I have seen her in and heart her lovely voice was the musical Rent - the movie - and I was shocked! I think I had a long time when I would listen to the Rent soundtrack over and over and over again. Same goes for Frozen now ;) Even my husband - who did not see the movie - recognises the song now!

3. Something new you want to try/learn how to do this year? 

Well I dunno if this counts, but I am trying to learn how to get in sync with my other half and organise a wedding that everyone would be happy of - family, friends & us. And that is one bad ass task! 

4. Scary campfire story? 

Actually we never did tell scary stories at the campfire, but we always loved to laugh and sing. So... unfortunately I have no tales of the unded to speak of - or would that be fortunately?! :p 

5. Do you play any instruments?

I used to go, when I was a small lass, to accordeon classes. Me and my sister. Unfortunately nothing got stuck to my head. My sister, on the other hand, is the talented one and can tell you the notes of the song only by listening to it. I also tried later on, around 2-3 years ago, to play the tin whistle and that was fun. I managed to learn only one song on it and that was Amazing Grace :)

6. Favorite Starbucks drink? (I have to ask, Im a barista!)

That would most probably be the Chai Tea Latte :)  Lovely black tea spiced blended with milk - soya milk please :) It used to be a dear friends fav until I tasted it as well and right now I wouldnt take anything else. 

7. Do you have a favorite quote?

8. Favorite Studio Ghibli movie?

Well tell you the truth, I am not good with names so this question got me into trouble and I had to Google my way out. Thank God for IMDB - my bestie when it comes to movie infos ;) I pulled a list of the Studio Ghibli movies and I am ashamed to say that I know less than half of those... But! My personal fav will always be Arrietty. I was a lass when I watched this but I remember it still :) and with great joy ;)

9. Do you collect anything? Howd the collection come about?

Oh, I have several :))) I think the most extensive ones I have are the earring collection + the book collection. I was never that much into earrings until about 5 years ago, when I joined the multinational company I am part of. One of my dear friend and collegue there started showing me this handmade products page and I just fell in love with different earrings. The books were always a burden I had to handle ever since I was a wee lass. I started buying books with my pocket money - like the huge collection from home wasnt enough! I believe my first book was a translation of the Star Wars (episode 4-6) in Romanian language and I had to save for a long while for it! I always loved books and I always loved smelling them - they all smell so very different! + the feeling of starting/finishing a good book that you wanna just keep with you forever is priceless! that is why I have to have it on the shelf, next to me...

10. Number one pet peeve?

Well... can I have 2?! When people do not listen and when people interrupt you. Totally NO NO! Very unpolite and shows disrespect. It is not gentleman/lady-like and should be avoided at all costs!

11. Favorite color of nail polish? Either for the color itself, or the name of the color 

Actually - dont stone me to death! - I dont do nail polish. I tried but it always goes haywire and I have no patience for it! I envy people who can do that and I have only 2 nail polish in the house: one that is no color, just for the shine, and one that is deadly green ;)) Both of them are from INGLOT - Polish company, really really good products ;)

Why relax our brains today just for the simple fact that it is Friday and weekend will be starting soon?! Today I will share with you a piece of information I bumped into by checking Facebook - yes, good things can come from FB! One of my previous teachers from the University of Economics posted the link to this article about the lexical distance between the languages in Europe. I thought you may like it as well - well at least some of you will :p

This chart shows the lexical distance — that is, the degree of overall vocabulary divergence — among the major languages of Europe.
The size of each circle represents the number of speakers for that language. Circles of the same color belong to the same language group. All the groups except for Finno-Ugric (in yellow) are in turn members of the Indo-European language family.
English is a member of the Germanic group (blue) within the Indo-European family. But thanks to 1066, William of Normandy, and all that, about 75% of the modern English vocabulary comes from French and Latin (ie the Romance languages, in orange) rather than Germanic sources. As a result, English (a Germanic language) and French (a Romance language) are actually closer to each other in lexical terms than Romanian (a Romance language) and French.
So why is English still considered a Germanic language? Two reasons. First, the most frequently used 80% of English words come from Germanic sources, not Latinate sources. Those famous Anglo-Saxon monosyllables live on! Second, the syntax of English, although much simplified from its Old English origins, remains recognizably Germanic. The Norman conquest added French vocabulary to the language, and through pidginization it arguably stripped out some Germanic grammar, but it did not ADD French grammar.

I Solemnly Swear I Am Up To No Good

!!!WARNING!!! Proceed with caution as this text may alter your opinion of me - Please forgive me!!!

Today I will choose a subject that used to be a problem for me... ok, maybe it is still, but I am doing way better now than I was years before. I will talk to you about ANGER! You know... as Yoda says "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."Well, tell you the truth I had a period in my life when I was upset on the world, on the people and even on myself for feeling the way a felt. I dunno how you lads/lasses work with anger but usually for me it bottles up until it gets to the fizzy point where it spills over and makes me act irrationally. And trust me, Alan Rickmans reaction here is like a small baby besides what I can do when I am upset!

For a long period in my life, in my childhood, I had self-esteem issues. I admit it, I am not a beauty and I do not shine and sparkle and for most of my life I felt like the ugly duckling. Fighting for my world and my way. I was not the popular girl in school, or even in class, and I was much rather like the teachers pet, but only due to the fact that I loved learning new things. I never liked kissing arses and acting stupid in order to get people to like me. I will be like I am and you will choose to love or hate me. Of course, I would rather have you love me than hate me! And of course, I would feel unloved by the end of the day, when the boys would be mean - as they usually are in kindergarten and smaller grades. By a certain point in time I would think that all things could be handled and fixed with a talk between children... time taught me otherwise! And it taught me that if you cannot handle things by talking you may need to fix them by fighting.

A good punch positioned properly (as you can see Hermione is doing the same ;) wits beyond measure sometimes do not help! And some boys needs to be taught a lesson!) can do a lot of good things ;) Just imagine... once you kick a boys arse he will look different at you ;) I always went into a fight unplanned and out of the blue, with bottled rage inside me ready to pour out. And tell you the truth, it made me feel good knowing that I was able to defend myself if needed be. It makes me both proud and ashamed to say that on 7th grade I actually broke the head of one of my schoolmates. I have no practice or training in fighting and the things I know are mainly things I caught up while watching boys fight or movies or feeling what moves would come natural. My big problem - according to my awesome fiance - is the fact that I enter fights head on and I never plan. I go with the flow and do my best to protect myself and win by strength - which usually works if people see you desperate and then coming for them ;)))) or taking them by surprise ;)

It is way better - according to my opinion - to step up and fight for your rights and for your freedom and respect than just hang around and have people pick at you, while you are trying not to panic and breathing in a paper bag in order not to pass out... I prefer to face my fears and to tell people what I think. Thant helps my anger not to lead into hate and then further on into suffering... I think Ill pass that! I admit that I have loads of fears inside me but I face them daily and try to make them smaller and smaller so my hate would not bottle up again and explode. Because there is always a downside of exploding: hurting the ones you love! Now, I know that God is there for us so we would never fear but I am still not sure how that truly works out... I always had a fear or two running at the back of my head: I feared that my sister was the best daughter my mum had, I feared that I would not become everything my parents would have liked me to be, I feared that I will remain single for the rest of my life and grow old by myself... Thankfully God makes different plans with us - plans that he chooses not to share until we are ready. And yelling to him "TELL ME!" does not help either ;)

Now I would love to tell you that I will never say things like Fred & George... that I will never fight anyone... that I will behave properly and ladylike for the rest of my life. But I would lie! We never know what will happen next so grant me the vote of confidence that everything I will do was planned before I was born!

Mental Attitude

Having a positive attitude is good but you also need to have the will to win (Abrahams 44). At the end of the 90 minutes the only thing that matters is the scoreline. Not how well you played or how much possession you had but rather how many times each team could score a goal.

Dan Abrahams brings up this quote from Lionel Messi within his book, "Something deep in my character allows me to take the hits and get on with trying to win" (44). What he is trying to explain with this quote is how you cant let small things in your life distract you from your ultimate goal. This shows you just how important Mental attitude is to soccer and to life in general. If you have the will and the want to do good and succeed, you will do so. But if you do not have the will and want to succeed then you will fail. You can only get out as much as you put in. This saying is true in many situations but especially within soccer. If you out on the field training everyday and working hard youre more likely to reach your goal of being the best you can then a player that is at home playing video games and eating junk food.

What is talent if it is not accompanied by hard work and dedication?

Growth of Mind

I have found that the overall message of the book, Procrastination by Jane B. Burka, PhD & Lenora M. Yuen, PhD, is a concept called "Growth of Mind". Many procrastinators are actually perfectionists! But they struggle with failure. Some perfectionists believe that they have to complete a task perfectly even if its goal is impossible. For example (Now this is an extreme situation but its just to get the point across), say its your first day working at McDonalds. Being the perfectionist that you are, every mistake that you make is seen as a flaw or yours. You begin to feel that maybe working at a fast food restaurant is not your style. This would be an example of someone with a Fixed Mindset: intelligent attributes are fixed and permanent, and success is all about proving yourself and validating that you are smart and talented (Burka and Yuen 28). Having this mindset puts a ton of stress on you, always fighting to prove yourself. The pressure to perform well on finals would be unbearable.

On the flip side, Growth Mindset: hard work and effort make you smarter and better over time (Burka and Yuen 29). Your self worth is not determined by how well you complete a task but on how much you improve. The definition of  "ability" is no longer fixed on entity; it is something that can change and develop. This mindset decreases stress immensely, creating the central goal to improve rather than to prove your self worth. Adopting this mindset is one way to reduce procrastination, maybe even eliminate it. You no longer feel the need to prove yourself. Difficult goals appear to be learning opportunities to stretch and improve your abilities. If you fail, you do not feel like a failure. Instead you redouble your efforts and work harder rather than procrastinating your efforts.

Try using Growth of Mind concept on small tasks in your life, slowly implementing it into serious task.

The result of three years of painstakingly meticulous work, this car was built using the finest engineers and master boat builders who were tru e to the original in every way. The car will be sold with all history including photographic reference, all receipts, MOT’s and blueprint drawings.







Measuring in at 18 feet long, 6 feet wide and 1.5 tons this Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a large and impressive vehicle. The car is road legal, has the registration number ‘GEN 22’ and is registered with the DVLA as ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. Power comes from a 3L V6 Ford engine with a BorgWarner automatic gearbox. It has not been driven in the last 18 months and could do with a service and sympathetic restoration, but it drives and naturally causes a stir wherever it goes!



One of the most coveted cars from the silver screen, the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang vintage racing car was designed by Ken Adam and built by Ford Racing Team. For the film version, only six cars were created, including one fully functional road-going car – which recently came up for auction with an estimate of $1,000,000 – 2,000,000.





Mr. Green owned and used the car until 2007, when it was acquired with finance by a private collector. In September 2005, Mr Green approached Bonhams for a valuation and they were quoted as saying that the “car has potential to raise considerable income” and features “coachwork of the highest quality”. They believed the car could reach £250,000 at auction. Mr Green decided to keep the car at that time and only parted with it in June 2007 for £250,000.



Once under new ownership, the private collector wanted to make some more improvements by taking the car to ‘Design For Sport’ – where they specially designed and custom built automatically opening wings, rising propellers and rotating blades. This involved fitting a microprocessor control unit with wireless key control in to the wicker picnic basket on to the back of the car. These striking components are beautifully integrated and truly add to the magic of this special automobile. The cost of these improvements totalled some £48,720.





The film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a true Hollywood classic, and has been a beloved part of many millions of childhoods for decades. Originally written by James Bond author, Ian Flemming, the 1968 film script was written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes. Whilst the car was undoubtedly the star of the film, the lead character was played by Dick Van Dyke and the Director was Albert R. Broccoli – who was the co-producer of the James Bond series of films.



It is being offered for sale via an online auction starting on Sunday 4th September to coincide with the cars appearance at the Chelsea Auto Legends Show on the same day.

Celebrating The LadyBug 1 Year

Dear friends,

What a ride this year has been! Today this small and home-like blog just turned 1 year old! I am having mixed up feelings about this but they are all positive in the end. When I started this blog I wanted to make it easier both for me and for my family & friends to see what I am doing. Before starting this blog I had constant questions about how and what am I doing and what are my plans. Now the plans are out here for them to see and to ask away questions. In this way I never got the same question twice - as I used to :) 

This blog went through a couple of phases where I had no clue how it would look like, how many tabs and subjects I would talk of, and as time went by this place became larger and larger and from posting pictures I did with short lines of description it turned out into a "full time job" :) Maintaining a blog and finding ideeas to write about each day sometimes can be quite of a challenge and I am proud to say I have done this for a full year and never missed a day! I dunno if I will keep going in this pace or I will ocasionally take some time off and not write for a day or two - most certainly I would need to do that in August, when I have the Church Ceremony + Wedding Party...

Along the way I met some adorable/gorgeous/amazing/creative/funny people in this trade and I must say I love bloggers and I love blogging! If one would be able to have it for real a full time job, now that would be something! :) Unfortunately as far as I tracked, here in Europe is not that frequent - rather in the States, where as usual the possibilities are unlimited, but maybe as I will blow the 1 year muffin I will make a wish for it ;) Anyway... if I would wish upon a star I would also wish for blogging conferences and meetings... closer to Poland :) and I would wish for inspiration and time and patience and subjects and freedom of speech - all combined make the perfect ingredients ;)

I would like to thank each and every one of you lads/lasses for sticking around and reading my stories or just enjoying my pictures. This an unusual front door bus with a ladder in the back so people could ride on top, This is a steam powered bus built in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor County, Washington in 1902.  It was in passenger service between Aberdeen and Hoquaim for just eleven days when it slipped off the road and into a creek, breaking a passengers neck in the process.  The lawsuit drove the company out of business (Steve found this out with magic!)
